Hard to Find Switches and Switch Plates

Posted by Kyle Design on April 16, 2012

For some of us, a trip to the hardware store just doesn’t cut it when we need to replace a switch or wall plate. Why? Here are 7 reasons you may need to order a specialty switch plate from Kyle Switch Plates:

Reason #1: Odd Size

Switch plates come in a variety of sizes including Standard, Narrow, Mid-Size, and Oversized (also called Jumbo).

Toggle Switch Plate in 4 Sizes and Finishes

Swtich Plate Sizes and Dimensions

While standard, mid-sized and oversized switch plates are typically the same dimension, narrow plates come in a variety of widths: 1-3/4″, 2″, or 2-1/4″.

Shop Standard Switchplates

Shop Narrow Switchplates

Shop Mid-Size Switchplates

Shop Oversized Switchplates.

It may be difficult to find the exact plate you’re looking for because it’s not a standard sized plate. If you’re unsure, measure the plate that needs to be replaced (if you have it) or the area of the wall that needs to be covered. The size of the plate will not effect the size of the opening for the switch, just the area of the wall that is covered. Then visit Kyle Switch Plates’ Wallplate Sizing Guide to find what you need.

You may have a switch plate that looks like a standard Decora Rocker (shown above, far left), but the sizing of the hole for the switch or the overall dimensions are off. If your home was built in the 1950s, 60s, or 70s, you may have an Old Style Switch Plate which would explain why you’re having a difficult time finding a replacement. Order Old Style Switch Plates at

Reason #2: Odd Configuration

If you need a combination plate with more than 1 or 2 styles of device openings (like a Toggle, Decora Rocker, and Duplex Outlet all in 1 plate), it can be difficult to find the wallplate you need in stores. The best place to look for combination wall plates is online at Kyle Switch Plates Online Store of Combination Switch Plates. They have the largest selection of irregular switchplates on the web and they’re available in a variety of colors. With hundreds of combo switch plates, you’re practically guaranteed to find the one that’s right for you.

Reason #3: Special Color

If your switch, outlet, or plate is not white or ivory, you’re limited to what you can find in stores and you may have been told the part you need doesn’t exist! Kyle Switch Plates keeps a large stock of switches, electrical devices, and wallplates in their warehouse that are not only white and ivory but also stainless steel, black, brass, almond, bronze, oil-rubbed bronze, gray, copper, brown, and tons more. Shop Switches & Electrical Devices or Switchplates by Color at Kyle Switch Plates.

Reason #4: Old Home

If your house was built in the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, or 1980s, you may find that your switches and wall plates don’t look like the “regular” ones you see in more modern homes. If so, there’s a good chance you have a Low Voltage Lighting System and your best source for replacement switches and switch plates is Kyle Switch Plates. Keep reading for more information about Low Voltage Systems (Reason #5) and discontinued switches and plates (Reason #6).

As we mentioned in Reason #1 above, you may have a wall plate that looks very similar to a Decora Rocker with a rectangular opening, but the sizing is off. If your home was built in the 1950s, 1960s, or 1970s, you may have an Old Style Wall Plate which you can buy online from Kyle Switch Plates – click Old Style Light Switch Plates.

Reason #5: Low Voltage System

If your home has a low-voltage lighting system, finding replacement switches and plates can be difficult. Your electrician may even tell you that they’ve never seen a system like yours before. Yikes! Your best source for information about low-voltage systems is Kyle Switch Plates – on their website you can determine which type of low voltage system you have, purchase hard-to-find low voltage parts including relays, switches and switch plates, and find helpful wiring diagrams. They have everything you need for GE Low Voltage, Bryant, Remcon, Sierra and Despard, and Touch-Plate low voltage systems. You can also call them direct to get help determining what you have and need.

Reason #6: Discontinued Switches and Plates

Many low-voltage devices have been discontinued, which means you’ll never find a replacement in stores. But, for every system that has been discontinued, Kyle Switch Plates has a solution and everything you need to get your old system converted to a currently manufactured one. They’ve tracked down every switch that is still being made, which you can purchase on their website. They even manufacturer their own line of affordable replacement switch plates for GE systems that you won’t find anywhere else. Visit Kyle Switch Plates’ Low Voltage Lighting Store to learn more and find the parts you need.

Old GE, Old Bryant & both Older & Newer Remcom switches have been discontinued. Buy compatible replacement switches at

Reason #7: Your Switch or Plate is Just “Different”

If your switch and cover plate are different from “regular” ones like Toggle and Decora Rocker and you’re sure you don’t have a low-voltage system, you may be looking for Despard or Push Button switches and wallplates, or Louvered, Deep, Round plates or plates with rounded corners. Check out what’s in stock and ready to ship in the wallplate warehouse at Kyle Switch Plates.

Hey Artsy Smartsy Types! Maker Faire for Creative Tech Arts This Weekend in San Mateo, CA

Posted by Kyle Design on May 30, 2009

The coolest fair ever, the Maker Faire – science masquerading as art, high tech passing as toys, creative solutions to world problems pretending simply to be fun – is this weekend, May 30 and 31, 2009 in San Mateo, CA.

Get yourself a creative business card holder that reflects both hands-on and high functioning.

Get yourself a creative business card holder that reflects both hands-on and high functioning.

Any of you (and your kids) who love crafts, computers, music, making, DIY, tinkering, technology, recycling, building, inventing, collaborating, this is THE place to be. You’ll come away inspired, informed, invigorated and happy. Find suppliers of really unique crafts and tech materials for future projects, websites with cool things to do, and entrepreneurs who have turned hobbies into fun businesses. A “DO NOT MISS” for families.

This year’s theme is Re-Make America, in keeping with President’s Obama‘s  call to action for “the risk takers, the doers, and the makers of things” to help re-invent the USA. This is the fourth annual fair, and in past years things that captured my family’s attention were the crazy parts bikes, the motorized giant cupcake-mobiles, Fiddlesticks bendable fabric building sticks, the computerized elaborate egg decorating machine.

Robot Memory Box in Wood - A creative way to store memories of fun events.

Robot Memory Box in Wood - A creative way to store memories of fun events.

I’ve always loathed the term “artsy fartsy” because it seems intentionally disrespectful to those are trying to do something different. If you never try, you’ll never succeed! So I much prefer the term “artsy smartsy” because it better represents what inventors, designers and artists are all about. It certainly sums up this show. Bright ideas and creative execution. Really smart, funny people who express that humor in their art and technological products. I love being an artist and I LOVE this fair!

The Maker Faire website describes the event as “The ultimate DIY festival – It’s county fair meets science fair meets farmers market meets burning man for families! Maker Faire will showcase individual creativity and grassroots innovation in the largest festival devoted to DIY culture and technology in the country.”

Have a crafts room or workshop? This Building Tools DIY light switch plate is the perfect finishing touch.

The fair is open 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Sunday at the San Mateo County Expo Center.

Maker Faire Tips:

Buy your tickets off-site or ahead of time online. The crowds keep growing every year and I can only imagine what it will be like this year. Chronicle story in the paper yesterday about it, too.

Come early – lines are long just to get into the parking lot, let alone the door.

All you black sheep out there who are making a living in an unexpected way, here's a wallet that reflects your independence!

All you black sheep out there who are making a living in an unexpected way, here's a wallet that reflects your independence!

Bring food if you don’t like fried, (keep it in an ice chest in your car). Plus you can, once again, avoid long lines. (Although I am hopeful that there might be more of an emphasis on good food with the suggestion that there will be a Farmers Market.) This fair is so fabulous you will be tempted to starve rather than miss anything waiting in a line somewhere!

Wear a hat: Half the events and projects are outside, although this year it looks like it will be overcast most of the day.

Take a quick peek into each building first: Each building has a different theme and you can get stuck in any one of them for hours, so see which one looks like it is most interesting for you and your kids before getting involved. You WILL run out of time and not be able to see or experience everything.

Brown Switch Plates, Electrical Devices – Large Wall Plate Selection New at Kyle Design

Posted by Kyle Design on April 20, 2009

Update: Kyle Design has launched it’s new site dedicated to switch plates and electrical devices: Kyle Switch Plates.

Finally! By popular request, Kyle Switch Plates is now selling brown switch plates, outlet covers and matching brown electrical switches. And we are stocking them in a wide range of standard sized wall plates as well as those hard-to-find oversize switch plate sizes.

Brown Wall Plates for Natural Harmony and Tranquility

Rich Brown Switch Plates

Our light switch wall plates are a rich mahogany brown that is beautiful with the natural, tranquil look in room decor that is a growing trend in 2009. These neutral colors evoke calm and warmth, creating spaces that are comforting and inviting, an especially important feeling for home owners facing a challenging housing market. Brown switch plates are the right finishing touch against wood paneling or walls painted in earthy hues, natural wheat colors, rich cranberry shades or warm tropical tones.

Real Switch Plates for Real Homes

Ever notice something missing in those magazine spreads for room design ideas or on the design resources gallery pages on paint manufacturer’s web sites? All the switch plates have been airbrushed out of the photos! Get real. This is simply weird and not at all possible in actual homes. Besides, decorative switch plates can play an important roll in bringing elements of a room together. When done right, they add to the look. Why are those professional designers so lame that they can’t even figure out how to do that? IMHO, they need to shop at Kyle Switch Plates – I have some very sophisticated decorative wall plates as an alternative to the classic metal switch plates shown here.

Brown switch plates and electrical devices can harmonize without drawing the eye, giving rooms a cohesive, understated look. Furthermore, light switch plates can provide a small, appropriate decorative accent that unifies decor within a room. Brown wall plates are an affordable, realistic solution to redecorating a home.

Current Design Trends

Current looks reflect rich wooden furnishings, wood molding and trims, neutral window treatments, warm-toned fabric colors and earthy wall paint finishes like mocha, chocolate brown, cinnamon bark, autumn harvest, pepper spice and ancient bronze. Major room elements such as wood tables and chairs provide a solid foundation, and nature based paint colors (and the neutral switchplates that go best with them) help create a cohesive look. Brown switch plates look great with neutral color schemes, country style homes, Southwest decor and Retro looks.

Coordinating Electrical Devices

Brown Switches for Brown Switch Plates

Real homes also have practical electrical needs. Maybe you need a single device that can control three or even four lights. Or a brown electrical device that has a small light and outlet all on one housing. Don’t let wiring issues prevent you from choosing the best wall plates for your room. Kyle Switch Plates stocks brown electrical switches and receptacles to help you meet code and solve all your electric supply challenges.

Discount Light Switch Plates – Cheap Way to Cover Contractor Mistakes

Posted by Kyle Design on July 21, 2008

Cheap White Switch Plates When Minor Imperfections Dont Matter

Cheap White Switch Plates When Minor Imperfections Don't Matter

An ongoing issue for us at Kyle Design is what to do with our slightly imperfect light switch plates and electrical outlet covers. We offer a 15% discount on our regular switchplates, but wanted to offer better pricing on our irregulars. This week we started offering these perfectly usable switchplates on sale. Right now they are available in affordable boxes of 50 plates in mixed sizes, although we are open to requests for sizes if we have them.

Here at the studio we are very picky and reject cover plates if they have noticeable marks. They still meet code and look attractive but generally have some minor scratches, dents or defects in the paint. Sizes may include toggle, outlet, Decora rocker, oversized, cable, blank, jumbo, multiple gang, phone or combination sizes.

On Sale Black Switchplates - Perfect For DIY Crafts Projects

On Sale Black Switchplates - Perfect For DIY Crafts Projects

My staff and I have periodic discussions about the best way to dispose of these plates. Do we throw them away? Recycle them? Sell them by size? Sell them by color? Now, I did not want to spend hours and hours cataloging each plate, photographing it, processing the image for the web and creating a product to put on our site. WAY too time-consuming for something inexpensive that I’m trying to sell cheaply.

Even recycling the switchplate covers seemed wasteful because the blemishes are often very hard to see, or nearly impossible from a distance. The more we thought about it, the more we realized that there are many people who could use plates like these:

Inexpensive Switch Plates for Building Contractors: These discount wall plates are great to have on hand for contractor mistakes: cover emergency “situations” or finish large projects on time. It is quite common for a job to change, for an installation problem to come up or for an error to be made where a different size switch plate is then needed.

Discount Ivory Light Switch Plates Make Redecorating Affordable

Discount Ivory Light Switch Plates Make Redecorating Affordable

Having a variety of sizes on hand make it easy to switch out a wall panel, hide a contractor mistake or cover a box opening that was cut too large, or be able to quickly get all the electrical boxes covered before inspection. This is a very common situation – a customer changes their mind, a beam is in the way, built-up paint around a current plate chips when removed – the list goes on. We hear about all of them here at Kyle Design, and we can help. We’ve made it our business to stock those difficult to find plates, and hard-to-find inserts to adapt the plates for different needs.

Even better, this might be a great way to request a discount odd-sized switch plate cover and get a lot of other usable sizes at the same time. For example, if you need a simple 7 gang toggle switch plate you can request that we include one in the box and ask us to contact you if such plate is not available. The price may be comparable to the single plate alone. This is a really good deal! Just contact us if you have any questions.

Cheap DIY Crafts Projects: These are exactly the types of switch plates that work well for do-it-yourself crafts projects. Sometimes, it is easier and cheaper to practice new techniques or styles on a bargain item. Learn how to work with your materials, practice embellishing plates with jewels, stones, paints, ribbons, etc. to get your look down. And if your technique can cover up those slight defects, then all the better. No need to spend a fortune just to hide it anyway!

Wallpaper Covered Light Switch Plates are Easy to Make

Wallpaper Covered Light Switch Plates are Easy to Make

Affordable Home Decorating with Matching Switch Plate Covers: Perhaps you’d like your light cover plates to match the wallpaper or paint on your walls. These plates work great for covering with wallpaper. I even show you fast, no-mess, step-by-step instructions on how to easily upholster switch plates with wall paper or other decorative papers here: Quick Instructions: How To Cover Light Switch Plates With Fabric or Wallpaper.

Easy Online Shopping at Kyle Design: So right now, we are offering these discounted switchplates in three finishes: White Discount Switch Plates, Black Discount Switch Plates and Ivory Discount Switchplates. Better yet, we offer inexpensive flat rate ground shipping, so we will ship you the whole box of wall cover plates for a great price. We don’t nickel and dime you with surprise “handling” costs or outrageous per item shipping costs showing up in your cart. You can see exactly what you are paying when you put an item in your shopping cart. No need to fill out all your billing and shipping information to find out what the total cost will be, either. (The only exception is air freight shipping. If you decide you must receive your order immediately and select Next Day, 2nd Day or 3 Day air shipping, we will weigh your box and send you an updated order confirmation with the actual costs reflected on it – that way you can decide just how urgently you need those coverplates.)

These light switch cover plates are available on a first come, first served basis while supplies last (although we are finding more every day), so if you are needing a specific hard-to-find-size, it is probably best to contact us sooner rather than later for best selection.

Mission Period Decorative Light Switch Plates and Outlet Covers in Most Sizes

Mission Period Decorative Light Switch Plates and Outlet Covers in Most Sizes

Now, we still have our beautiful, first quality light switch plates and outlet covers in 15 different metal finishes and more than 130 sizes in some finishes (White, Satin Stainless Steel) so you can find just the right wallplate for any project you are working on, plus we have creative solutions for the extremely odd plate configuration or phone/cable/internet communication setup you may be installing.

Plus, we have a collection of very popular designer switchplates in styles such as Art Deco, Greene and Greene style Mission Period, Cats, Dogs, Celtic Knots, Butterflies, Bubbles, Flowers, Vine Patterns, Modern Milano – in other words, original designs that range from antique to contemporary. Our wall cover plates are available in more than 50 decorative sizes and come with matching screws as well. Check us out at Kyle Design!

Antique Reproduction Push Button Switch Plates, Switches, Dimmers

Posted by Kyle Design on April 11, 2008

Shop Push Button Switches & Cover Plates

Another emerging trend for us is the renewed interest in push button switch plates and switches that were popular in the early 20th century in American Craftsman bungalows, Arts and Crafts style homes and Victorian era houses. They recently popped up in the movie The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and there are whole magazines devoted to those interested in remodeling, restoring and maintaining these beautiful turn-of-the-century homes, including American Bungalow, Victorian Home, etc., and we have good news for those of you who appreciate old-fashioned style touches.

After much searching, we are excited to have found a current manufacturer of these old-fashioned push button devices. We now happily can offer the pushbutton devices in single pole push-button light switches, 3 way push button light switches and 600W pushbutton light dimmer switches (to name a few) with great prices. These antique reproduction switches are designed to work with both existing wiring in homes undergoing restoration as well as with new electrical wiring in modern homes.

My sister lives in a 1920 built Craftsman Bungalow that she has been renovating for the last 10 years. Her home still has some of the existing push button plates and switches. She chose to keep these switches when she had the electric wiring redone because she wanted to maintain the original look and feel of the electrical devices of the period.

But being true to the period doesn’t mean you have to give up newer innovations. One modern convenience is the push button style light dimmer switch. The top knob on these dimmers turns the device on and off, while the bottom button can be rotated to dim the lights.

In addition, we have expanded our selection of push button switchplates to include more finishes and sizes. We carry the one gang single pushbutton switch plates in 14 metal finishes including black, white, ivory, satin stainless steel, polished chrome, polished brass, polished copper, brushed brass, antique brass, brushed bronze, oil rubbed bronze, dark oiled bronze, satin aluminum and brushed aluminum. In addition, we carry two gang double push-button switch plates, triple pushbutton cover plates and even a four gang push-button wall plate in white. All priced to be affordable so your renovation project doesn’t go over budget.

Decorative Push Button Light Switch Covers

Be sure to check out our decorative push button switch plates as well. These decorator switch covers are available in a range of patterns -from antique to modern designs.
