Hard to Find Switches and Switch Plates

Posted by Kyle Design on April 16, 2012

For some of us, a trip to the hardware store just doesn’t cut it when we need to replace a switch or wall plate. Why? Here are 7 reasons you may need to order a specialty switch plate from Kyle Switch Plates:

Reason #1: Odd Size

Switch plates come in a variety of sizes including Standard, Narrow, Mid-Size, and Oversized (also called Jumbo).

Toggle Switch Plate in 4 Sizes and Finishes

Swtich Plate Sizes and Dimensions

While standard, mid-sized and oversized switch plates are typically the same dimension, narrow plates come in a variety of widths: 1-3/4″, 2″, or 2-1/4″.

Shop Standard Switchplates

Shop Narrow Switchplates

Shop Mid-Size Switchplates

Shop Oversized Switchplates.

.

It may be difficult to find the exact plate you’re looking for because it’s not a standard sized plate. If you’re unsure, measure the plate that needs to be replaced (if you have it) or the area of the wall that needs to be covered. The size of the plate will not effect the size of the opening for the switch, just the area of the wall that is covered. Then visit Kyle Switch Plates’ Wallplate Sizing Guide to find what you need.

You may have a switch plate that looks like a standard Decora Rocker (shown above, far left), but the sizing of the hole for the switch or the overall dimensions are off. If your home was built in the 1950s, 60s, or 70s, you may have an Old Style Switch Plate which would explain why you’re having a difficult time finding a replacement. Order Old Style Switch Plates at http://www.kyleswitchplates.com.

Reason #2: Odd Configuration

If you need a combination plate with more than 1 or 2 styles of device openings (like a Toggle, Decora Rocker, and Duplex Outlet all in 1 plate), it can be difficult to find the wallplate you need in stores. The best place to look for combination wall plates is online at Kyle Switch Plates Online Store of Combination Switch Plates. They have the largest selection of irregular switchplates on the web and they’re available in a variety of colors. With hundreds of combo switch plates, you’re practically guaranteed to find the one that’s right for you.

Reason #3: Special Color

If your switch, outlet, or plate is not white or ivory, you’re limited to what you can find in stores and you may have been told the part you need doesn’t exist! Kyle Switch Plates keeps a large stock of switches, electrical devices, and wallplates in their warehouse that are not only white and ivory but also stainless steel, black, brass, almond, bronze, oil-rubbed bronze, gray, copper, brown, and tons more. Shop Switches & Electrical Devices or Switchplates by Color at Kyle Switch Plates.

Reason #4: Old Home

If your house was built in the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, or 1980s, you may find that your switches and wall plates don’t look like the “regular” ones you see in more modern homes. If so, there’s a good chance you have a Low Voltage Lighting System and your best source for replacement switches and switch plates is Kyle Switch Plates. Keep reading for more information about Low Voltage Systems (Reason #5) and discontinued switches and plates (Reason #6).

As we mentioned in Reason #1 above, you may have a wall plate that looks very similar to a Decora Rocker with a rectangular opening, but the sizing is off. If your home was built in the 1950s, 1960s, or 1970s, you may have an Old Style Wall Plate which you can buy online from Kyle Switch Plates – click Old Style Light Switch Plates.

Reason #5: Low Voltage System

If your home has a low-voltage lighting system, finding replacement switches and plates can be difficult. Your electrician may even tell you that they’ve never seen a system like yours before. Yikes! Your best source for information about low-voltage systems is Kyle Switch Plates – on their website you can determine which type of low voltage system you have, purchase hard-to-find low voltage parts including relays, switches and switch plates, and find helpful wiring diagrams. They have everything you need for GE Low Voltage, Bryant, Remcon, Sierra and Despard, and Touch-Plate low voltage systems. You can also call them direct to get help determining what you have and need.

Reason #6: Discontinued Switches and Plates

Many low-voltage devices have been discontinued, which means you’ll never find a replacement in stores. But, for every system that has been discontinued, Kyle Switch Plates has a solution and everything you need to get your old system converted to a currently manufactured one. They’ve tracked down every switch that is still being made, which you can purchase on their website. They even manufacturer their own line of affordable replacement switch plates for GE systems that you won’t find anywhere else. Visit Kyle Switch Plates’ Low Voltage Lighting Store to learn more and find the parts you need.

Old GE, Old Bryant & both Older & Newer Remcom switches have been discontinued. Buy compatible replacement switches at http://www.kyleswitchplates.com

Reason #7: Your Switch or Plate is Just “Different”

If your switch and cover plate are different from “regular” ones like Toggle and Decora Rocker and you’re sure you don’t have a low-voltage system, you may be looking for Despard or Push Button switches and wallplates, or Louvered, Deep, Round plates or plates with rounded corners. Check out what’s in stock and ready to ship in the wallplate warehouse at Kyle Switch Plates.

Think You Need a Custom Wallplate?

Posted by Kyle Design on March 30, 2012

We all have that odd light switch or outlet cover plate that’s an odd combination. We may not realize it until we need a replacement and – eh oh! – Home Depot and Lowe’s doesn’t carry it. Now what? Over the past several years I’ve come to the conclusion that there is literally nothing that can’t be found online.  That includes random switch plates with weird configurations. The problem is, if you think you need a custom plate when you really don’t, you may end up spending way more than you need to by ordering a made-to-order wallplate.

You may think you have a switch plate that’s so unique it needs to be custom made, but the truth is, Kyle Switch Plates carries over 300 irregular switchplates that can’t be found in stores but are currently in-stock and ready to ship from their wallplate warehouse. They carry the largest selection of switch plates online and offer the most affordable light switch plates and outlet covers on the web. Even better – all orders ship out within 1 – 2 business days (with cheap, flat-rate shipping!) which means you don’t have to wait a week (or longer) for your “custom” plate to be made, and then wait another week for it to be delivered.

If you have odd configurations of light switch and outlet covers, check out the enormous selection of affordable plates at Kyle Switch Plates. Hundreds of discount switch plate layouts, 20 popular and uncommon finishes (including white, stainless steel, brown, and ivory), cheap discounted prices, and fast flat-rate shipping. You won’t be disappointed!

Low Voltage Switch Compatibility

Posted by Kyle Design on March 15, 2011

discontinued_low_voltage_switches

Though vintage low voltage systems have become obsolete, replacement parts are still manufactured and available.

One of our most common home hardware questions is from customers with low voltage lighting systems in their home: “I need to replace an old low voltage switch. What kind of low voltage switch will work?” As very limited info on low voltage systems can be found these days, here’s a little history:

Original low voltage wiring systems were installed in mid-century homes during the 1940s to the 1980s and have since become obsolete, with many manufacturers discontinuing their low voltage product lines or going out of business. Some popular low voltage brands included General Electric (GE), Remcon, Bryant, Sierra and Touch-Plate, all of which have discontinued their original, older light switch and switch plate styles.

ge_bryant_remcon_touchplate_wallplate_compatibility

Touch-Plate switches can replace older General Electric (GE), Remcon and Bryant switches.

For low voltage replacement options, General Electric (GE) and Touch-Plate actively manufacture updated switches, wall switch plates and relays for use in their older low voltage lighting systems. Remcon (Amprobe) has discontinued their brand of low voltage devices and wall plates as recently as February 2011.

If same-brand hardware replacements are not available to replace your damaged or nonfunctional low voltage electrical equipment, read our Low Voltage Switch Compatibility guide to see if other brands of low voltage switches can be used in your wiring system. Newer Touch-Plate low voltage switches, for example, will work in older General Electric (GE), Remcon and Bryant low voltage systems, so they are a great compatible replacement option for many.

Have a low voltage system, but don’t know what type you have? Review Determine Your Low Voltage System to find more information and photos on common low voltage systems. This will help you narrow down what replacement parts and hardware will work with your wiring set-up, and make shopping for low voltage replacement parts much less of a headache!

How To Add Color Without Painting

Unique Custom Night Lights Add A Great Colorful Accent To Any Room

Unique Custom Night Lights Add A Great Colorful Accent To Any Room

Sun Catchers Add A Beautiful Pop Of Color To Your Space

Eggshell. Ivory. Pearl. It’s a well known fact that neutral colors are safe – they go well with everything, allowing for ultimate flexibility in decorating and they’re simply low maintenance, which is great when you don’t have the time or money to spend on home decor makeovers. However, too much white or beige can be overwhelming at times, so it’s a good idea to add some color to your home for dimension and personality. While painting can sometimes be expensive, time-consuming or relatively daunting for those who don’t particularly enjoy do-it-yourself (DIY) projects, you can find hassle-free ideas on how to add color without painting such as the following helpful tips and tricks:

Show Off Your Interests With Custom Designer Switch Plates

Decorate your switch plates with cool custom images and colors that reflect your interests.

1. Add colorful lighting. Striking stain glass night lights are both fashionable and functional – customize a night light with a decorative design image and beautiful stain glass color that matches the decor of a given room for a cool personal touch.

2. Take advantage of natural lighting. Hanging creative etched metal sun catchers can add a gorgeous burst of color to any room when the sun is shining at its brightest.

3. Decorate your switch plates and home appliances. Add personalized design patterns and vibrant colors to your switch plates to create stylish decorative wall plate covers. Or use practical organizing accessories like strong art glass magnet clips around your kitchen or office for subtle, yet creative works of art.

Need to replace your home appliances? Popular appliance manufacturers are now integrating vibrant colors like Blackberry (Eggplant Purple) and Lemongrass (Spring Green) into their product lines – forget stainless steel and add some personality to your kitchen, laundry room or bath with a jazzy refrigerator or bold washer and dryer set!

Wayne Thiebald Retrospective at the San Jose Museum of Art – A Feast for the Fiber Artist’s Eyes

Posted by Kyle Design on March 7, 2010

I saw the Wayne Thiebald – 70 Years of Painting show at the San Jose Museum of Art. Absolutely loved it! I’ve always like Thiebald’s work, but while walking through the exhibition, it dawned on me what the appeal is for me.

Number 70 Business Card Holder in Silver with Iridescent Copper Accents

Birthday Cake Pill Box in Silver with Iridescent Sunshine Color Accent

Wayne Thiebald might appreciate that cakes come in all colors at Kyle Design

His work is like fabric; richly woven and textural. As a fiber artist at heart (and at the start), his work speaks to me. One painting in particular, Dark City, 1999 in oil on canvas, held my attention for the longest time. The overall feel is quiet, yet there is so much activity, so much painted into every little square, so many wonderful colors created, that I couldn’t stop looking at it. It reminds me of specialty yarns that knitters and weavers use, where there are many colors and various type of fiber spun into one thread. I actually said out loud, “I want this painting.” (I can want, but I can’t get: it is part of the Thiebaud Family Collection, not to mention what it would cost.)

Gold City Lights Christmas Ornament with berry pink and emerald green accents.

Celebrate an Artist's Retrospective, Fabulous Vacation, or Special Event with a Cityscape Ornament

If you google Bay Area artist Wayne Thiebald and look at his work for the first time you might shrug. He started out as a graphic artist, so the subject matters of his paintings of food and commercial objects might seem staid. But the joy comes from the colors and textures he creates that are lost in translation to the screen, in particular on his landscapes and San Francisco cityscapes. He might use six different colors along the edge of a building or a cake which glow in person, but look flat on paper. This is a this retrospective you have to see. Then you will appreciate him for the master he is.

Hey Artsy Smartsy Types! Maker Faire for Creative Tech Arts This Weekend in San Mateo, CA

Posted by Kyle Design on May 30, 2009

The coolest fair ever, the Maker Faire – science masquerading as art, high tech passing as toys, creative solutions to world problems pretending simply to be fun – is this weekend, May 30 and 31, 2009 in San Mateo, CA.

Get yourself a creative business card holder that reflects both hands-on and high functioning.

Get yourself a creative business card holder that reflects both hands-on and high functioning.

Any of you (and your kids) who love crafts, computers, music, making, DIY, tinkering, technology, recycling, building, inventing, collaborating, this is THE place to be. You’ll come away inspired, informed, invigorated and happy. Find suppliers of really unique crafts and tech materials for future projects, websites with cool things to do, and entrepreneurs who have turned hobbies into fun businesses. A “DO NOT MISS” for families.

This year’s theme is Re-Make America, in keeping with President’s Obama‘s  call to action for “the risk takers, the doers, and the makers of things” to help re-invent the USA. This is the fourth annual fair, and in past years things that captured my family’s attention were the crazy parts bikes, the motorized giant cupcake-mobiles, Fiddlesticks bendable fabric building sticks, the computerized elaborate egg decorating machine.

Robot Memory Box in Wood - A creative way to store memories of fun events.

Robot Memory Box in Wood - A creative way to store memories of fun events.

I’ve always loathed the term “artsy fartsy” because it seems intentionally disrespectful to those are trying to do something different. If you never try, you’ll never succeed! So I much prefer the term “artsy smartsy” because it better represents what inventors, designers and artists are all about. It certainly sums up this show. Bright ideas and creative execution. Really smart, funny people who express that humor in their art and technological products. I love being an artist and I LOVE this fair!

The Maker Faire website describes the event as “The ultimate DIY festival – It’s county fair meets science fair meets farmers market meets burning man for families! Maker Faire will showcase individual creativity and grassroots innovation in the largest festival devoted to DIY culture and technology in the country.”

Have a crafts room or workshop? This Building Tools DIY light switch plate is the perfect finishing touch.

Have a crafts room or workshop? This Building Tools DIY light switch plate is the perfect finishing touch.

The fair is open 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Sunday at the San Mateo County Expo Center.

Maker Faire Tips:

Buy your tickets off-site or ahead of time online. The crowds keep growing every year and I can only imagine what it will be like this year. Chronicle story in the paper yesterday about it, too.

Come early – lines are long just to get into the parking lot, let alone the door.

All you black sheep out there who are making a living in an unexpected way, here's a wallet that reflects your independence!

All you black sheep out there who are making a living in an unexpected way, here's a wallet that reflects your independence!

Bring food if you don’t like fried, (keep it in an ice chest in your car). Plus you can, once again, avoid long lines. (Although I am hopeful that there might be more of an emphasis on good food with the suggestion that there will be a Farmers Market.) This fair is so fabulous you will be tempted to starve rather than miss anything waiting in a line somewhere!

Wear a hat: Half the events and projects are outside, although this year it looks like it will be overcast most of the day.

Take a quick peek into each building first: Each building has a different theme and you can get stuck in any one of them for hours, so see which one looks like it is most interesting for you and your kids before getting involved. You WILL run out of time and not be able to see or experience everything.

If you appreciate creative approaches to life, please check out Kyle Design for unique gifts and home decor. We have switch plates, business card holders and practical gifts for those interested in robotics, crafts, science, music and more.

Moms: Earth Day’s Earliest Advocates – And Mothers Didn’t Even Know It!

Posted by Kyle Design on April 22, 2009

Moms have always encouraged us to behave in ways that protect Mother Earth, whether they were conscious of it or not, and Earth Day 2009 is a great time day to reflect a moment on this. Consider if you will these momisms:

Wear a vegetable name badge holder to work so you remember to go green!

Feeling inspired to find new ways to save energy? This light bulb business card holder is great way to keep it on your mind.

Eat Your Vegetables! – Moms have been trying to get us to go green since the beginning of (my) time. Even Thumper in the movie Bambi (1942) quotes his mother. “”Eating greens is a special treat, It makes long ears and great big feet. But it sure is awful stuff to eat.” I made that last part up myself.” I shop locally at the Farmer’s Market here in Livermore, CA, for my greens and fruits the year round. I eat them, too. And ended up with big feet. 😉

Turn Off The Lights! – What household doesn’t ring with the echo of this familiar refrain of moms trying to save money? Turns out it also helps save the world. I tell my own kids that someday they will be sorry they wasted that energy. I can see their little minds calculating the veracity of such statements.

No TV Until You Finish Your Homework! – Yes, distract yourself with activities that don’t require the use of electricity. Maybe that’s not quite what mom meant, but hey, its good for the environment. Play outside! Hide in the dark! Anything to put off getting that homework done until the last minute. By the time you get it done, it’s past your bedtime and there is no need to fire up that big energy-sucking tube.

Hang your backpack on the side of your desk with this Television purse hook and think about your favorite TV show.

Hang your backpack on the side of your desk with this Television purse hook and think about your favorite TV show.

Hurry Up Or You’ll Be Walking To School! – Walking is great for kids. Perhaps they really do want to get that exercise. And maybe it isn’t just that Mom doesn’t want to be late for work. Really she’s trying to get you to burn less fossil fuel. And adding that heavy backpack is the best way to build muscle. Isn’t that what they do it the military during practice exercises? “It’s good for you!” Just want all kids want to hear.

Brown Switch Plates, Electrical Devices – Large Wall Plate Selection New at Kyle Design

Posted by Kyle Design on April 20, 2009

shop-brown-switch-plates-blog

Update: Kyle Design has launched it’s new site dedicated to switch plates and electrical devices: Kyle Switch Plates.

Finally! By popular request, Kyle Switch Plates is now selling brown switch plates, outlet covers and matching brown electrical switches. And we are stocking them in a wide range of standard sized wall plates as well as those hard-to-find oversize switch plate sizes.

Brown Wall Plates for Natural Harmony and Tranquility

brown-best-selling-switch-plates

Rich Brown Switch Plates

Our light switch wall plates are a rich mahogany brown that is beautiful with the natural, tranquil look in room decor that is a growing trend in 2009. These neutral colors evoke calm and warmth, creating spaces that are comforting and inviting, an especially important feeling for home owners facing a challenging housing market. Brown switch plates are the right finishing touch against wood paneling or walls painted in earthy hues, natural wheat colors, rich cranberry shades or warm tropical tones.

Real Switch Plates for Real Homes

Ever notice something missing in those magazine spreads for room design ideas or on the design resources gallery pages on paint manufacturer’s web sites? All the switch plates have been airbrushed out of the photos! Get real. This is simply weird and not at all possible in actual homes. Besides, decorative switch plates can play an important roll in bringing elements of a room together. When done right, they add to the look. Why are those professional designers so lame that they can’t even figure out how to do that? IMHO, they need to shop at Kyle Switch Plates – I have some very sophisticated decorative wall plates as an alternative to the classic metal switch plates shown here.

Brown switch plates and electrical devices can harmonize without drawing the eye, giving rooms a cohesive, understated look. Furthermore, light switch plates can provide a small, appropriate decorative accent that unifies decor within a room. Brown wall plates are an affordable, realistic solution to redecorating a home.

Current Design Trends

Current looks reflect rich wooden furnishings, wood molding and trims, neutral window treatments, warm-toned fabric colors and earthy wall paint finishes like mocha, chocolate brown, cinnamon bark, autumn harvest, pepper spice and ancient bronze. Major room elements such as wood tables and chairs provide a solid foundation, and nature based paint colors (and the neutral switchplates that go best with them) help create a cohesive look. Brown switch plates look great with neutral color schemes, country style homes, Southwest decor and Retro looks.

Coordinating Electrical Devices

brown-toggle-switches

Brown Switches for Brown Switch Plates

Real homes also have practical electrical needs. Maybe you need a single device that can control three or even four lights. Or a brown electrical device that has a small light and outlet all on one housing. Don’t let wiring issues prevent you from choosing the best wall plates for your room. Kyle Switch Plates stocks brown electrical switches and receptacles to help you meet code and solve all your electric supply challenges.
