Inspirational Lent Gifts

Posted by Kyle Design on February 21, 2012

Can you name 5 of the top 10 most common “addictions” people give up for Lent? My husband always gives up 1, and sometimes 2, items from the Top 10 List. I wasn’t raised Catholic so this has been a new concept to me and while I try not to tempt him I have yet to go 40 days without dropping even 1 of my guilty pleasures. Until this year. I’ve spent the past several weeks pondering what I will give up. Thinking I was rather creative I’ve announced all my “unique” ideas to my husband, only to learn that every one of them is actually quite common for Lent participants. Hmmmm. This got me wondering, what are the most common things people give up?

#10 Gossip

If you know someone who intends to give up gossiping for Lent, help them out with this inspirational box. This will encourage and remind them that they can do it! Engrave Ephesians 4:29 as an added reminder of how we should speak.

Personalized Cell Phone Pill Box

No Texting for Lent Reminder Box

#9 Texting

If your son or daughter is determined to give up text messaging during Lent, buy him or her a neat little reminder with this personalized pill box from Kyle Design. This girly one is pink, but there are more than 40 great colors to choose from. Engrave it with an inspirational message like “You can do it!” or “I’m so proud of you!”

Gold Cross Cigarette Case from Kyle Design

#8 Smoking

Smoking is an especially difficult thing to give up for Lent, and it shows true dedication! If your husband or wife would like to give up smoking for Lent, get him or her a personalized cross cigarette case. Put the remaining cigarettes from their last pack in this case and let it serve as a religious reminder not to smoke each time they instinctively reach for their smokes.

Pink and Silver TV Pill Box from Kyle Design

No Television Watching Reminder Box

#7 Television

Giving up television means missing out on all your favorite shows, but it gives you more quality time with your family. If someone you know has decided to skip TV for Lent, design a unique pill box with a “No TV for Lent 2012” engraving.

Gold and Blue Personalized Computer Pill Box

Facebook Free for 40 Days Reminder Box

#6 Facebook

Going Facebook Free for 40 Days isn’t easy – especially if you’re a teen or in your 20s. (OK, maybe some of us in our 30s struggle with this too!) Make sure you disable any facebook apps on your cell phone or ipad! Buy a cute computer themed pill box to carry around as a reminder. Engrave “40 Days of NO Facebook” and then write a note to yourself explaining why you chose facebook and what it means to you personally to give it up. Then, fold up your note and tuck it inside your pill box so you can read it when you’re feeling weak.

Exclamation Point Gift Pill Bos

@#$! No Cursing Reminder Box

#5 Cursing

Get this Exclamation Point pill box as a reminder that you plan to spend the next 40 days without swearing. Put some candy in the box and each time you want to curse but don’t, pull out a little treat to reward yourself! Engrave a Bible reference like James 3:10.

Red Wine Pill Box from Kyle Design

No Alcohol Wine Pill Box

#4 Alcohol

Many people choose to give up alcoholic beverages during the period of Lent. This can prove especially difficult if you like to enjoy a green beer on St. Patrick’s Day (I know I do!). But, it also means living a healthier lifestyle and enjoying 40 hangover free mornings in a row. Engrave this Alcoholic Beverages Ban Pill Box to remind you or a friend to stay sober during Lent.

Custom Caffeine Pill Box from Kyle Design

Say No to Soda Reminder Box

#3 Soda

Soda is my greatest weakness and would be the most difficult thing on this list for me to give up. Not only do french fries just taste better with Coke, but I rely on soda’s caffeine to keep me headache free throughout the day. If you or someone in your family is giving up soda for Lent, personalize this neat little caffeine molecule pill box for them – choose a gold or silver box, a blue, pink, green, red, or purple background color (to name a few – Kyle Design has 42 color choices) and even engrave it with your words of encouragement.  Don’t forget to add some Motrin to get them through those first few days of caffeine withdrawal!

Blue Desserts and Sweets Pill Box from Kyle Design

Tasty Treats Tempt Me Not Pill Box

#2 Chocolate / Sweets

Many brave souls give up desserts for Lent, relishing the sweet love of Jesus rather than indulging their sweet tooth. You’d think this would be harder for women than men, but when my husband has to sit next to me while I dip Oreos in milk, the temptation hits him pretty hard. You can personalize this desserts pill box for the man or women you know who’s decided to nix sweets this Lent season. And be sure to get them some extra Easter candy – they’re gonna need it come Easter Sunday!

Custom Coffee Cup Pill Case from Kyle Design

Coffee Caffeine Withdrawal Pain Pill Box

#1 Coffee

Starbucks won’t be happy with you (they sell 8,200,000 cups of coffee a day), but your wallet will! If you give up coffee for Lent you won’t be alone – it’s the most common thing people choose to deprive themselves of. This of course, only counts if you actually drink coffee. If not, look back down the list and find something more challenging for you, or choose something unique that’s not listed here (that’s my plan!).

If you’re like me, you didn’t grow up keeping this ritual of self-deprivation during the time between Ash Wednesday and Easter. Why not join me in my first year participating in Lent and see what spiritual blessings you get from it. It all starts tomorrow, February 22nd. All I ask is that you challenge yourself. Don’t pick an item that when you consider giving it up you automatically think, “I could go without that for 40 days…” Instead, pick something you could never give up, and let the power of the Holy Spirit get you through it. I believe the harder it is to give up, the more rewarding your experience will be.

Personalized Chinese New Year Gifts

Posted by Kyle Design on January 10, 2012

Happy New Year! As the calendar quickly turned from December to January we welcomed 2012 with fireworks, balloon drops, and champagne toasts around the world. And now another countdown begins – the coming of the Chinese New Year. Since the Chinese calendar is lunisolar, which means it’s based on the moon as well as the sun, the Chinese New Year can fall anywhere from January 21st to February 20th on the U.S. (solar-based) calendar. This year, it falls on Monday, January 23, 2012.

One thing I love about the Chinese Calendar is that each year is associated with one of 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac. 2012 is the Year of the Dragon. If you were born in 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, or 2000 you were born in the year of the Dragon. If not, do you know what your birth zodiac is? Look it up on this chart….

Notice any similarities between your zodiac animal and your personality? 😉

Whatever year you were born, Kyle Design can help commemorate your year with a custom animal business card case, engraved animal flask, or unique pill box. Or, give a friend or relative a unique Chinese New Year gift to help celebrate the exciting year that lies ahead in 2012.  Ring in the Year of the Dragon with personalized Chinese dragon money clips, engraved business card cases with dragons, dragon flasks, dragon nightlights, and more dragon gifts. Visit Chinese New Year Gifts for some ideas, and remember –

can be personalized with a dragon design and your choice of color behind the dragon.

Just pick a “DESIGN IT” gift and select a dragon design from the “Animal” Category (“Dragon #122” OR “Dragon-Chinese #187”).

Happy New Year everyone! 🙂

It’s Time to Talk Sweets!

Posted by Kyle Design on November 30, 2011

Um, how come no one told me there’s a National Desserts day? I’m surprised to learn such a thing exists and I haven’t heard of it…I mean, I, of all people, should have founded it! I’m an eat-dessert-for-breakfast, lunch and dinner kind of girl! (I mean as the entree, not as the encore.) If there’s leftover birthday cake sitting in my kitchen, you better believe I’m eating it for breakfast. And if I happen to catch a glance at the dessert menu, there’s a good chance I’m ordering the Warm Apple Crisp or Molten Chocolate Cake for dinner. This is something that has caused some tension between my health-nut husband and I, but it’s something I learned from my mother and life’s just too short (another thing she taught me) to skip dessert!

In celebration of sweets, Kyle Design has some great chocolate themed gifts for women who love sugary surprises. Dessert lovers beware – these tasty treats may make you hungry!

By the way, National Dessert Day was last month, but why wait? Go ahead and order dessert for your next entree – trust me, it tastes much better when you’re not too full to enjoy it! And don’t worry about adding on a couple of extra pounds – we’re headed into winter and it’s nothing a slouchy sweater or trendy trench coat won’t hide!

Extra Crispy Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp And Pie – Experimenting is Fun!

Posted by Kyle Design on June 13, 2009

It is fruit and berry season again, and the first day of summer vacation for the kids. I’ve just baked my second pie of the week plus a strawberry rhubarb crisp, with the help of four kids – my girls, age 10 and 13 and their boy cousins, age 11 and 14. Baking is a great way to keep kids busy, have them learn some new cooking skills and have them experiment with some new flavors. New for the boys: cardamom. New for all the kids: rhubarb.

(My first pie of the season was a bit of a disaster – my oven broke while the pie was in it baking – no flaky crust there! Just a soggy mess – sooo disappointing.) Oven has been fixed, and I was wanting to erase the bad pie memories with the wonderful smell of fruity baking goodness.

Love to bake? Enjoy fresh strawberries? Capture the spirit of the season with a strawberry name badge holder.

Love to bake? Enjoy fresh strawberries? Capture the spirit of the season with a strawberry name badge holder.

Today’s pie is a strawberry rhubarb pie, which was my dad’s favorite. With Father’s Day coming up next weekend, memories of him are on my mind. We used to grow rhubarb in our backyard growing up and when I saw it at the Farmers Market I knew that was the right pie for this new memory making job.

We made pie dough from scratch – really not hard or too time-consuming when you have a Cuisinart, although it turned out a little sticky for some reason this time. While waiting for the pie crust dough to sit in the refrigerator for an hour, however, we whipped together a slightly different strawberry rhubarb crisp that was really good (and gone before the pie was even come out of the oven, so I guess this new flavor was a winner!)

I’m an artist  – I love to experiment and try new ways of doing things and trying new flavors. Yet another creative outlet for me! My youngest daughter does not like fruit (horrors!), so I make a batch of crisp topping for her separately. This time we made a double batch and discovered that the extra crispy bits were especially good mixed into the regular crisp. Always something new….

Extra Crispy Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp

2 c. rhubarb, cubed into 1/2″ pieces

1 c. sliced strawberries

1/2 c. sugar

3 T.  flour

1/4. cardamom

dash of nutmeg

Combine and pour into a greased 8″ x 8″ baking pan.

1 c. brown sugar

1 c. flour

1 c. old-fashioned rolled oats

1/4 t. ground cardamom

dash of nutmeg

1/2 c. softened butter

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Combine topping ingredients in bowl or plastic bag and mix thoroughly. Sprinkle half of topping mix over filling. To create the extra crispy topping, pour the remaining topping mix into a separate greased oven-proof pan and bake at the same time as the pan of filling and topping. Remove the crispy topping after about 20-25 minutes (keep an eye on it so it doesn’t burn), and continue baking the filling and topping pan for about 10-15 minutes more, for a total of 35 minutes.

Serve up the crisp filling and sprinkle the extra crispy topping over it, stirring in if desired. The result is a delicious chewy, crispy, sweet, sour mix of flavors and textures.

3 c. rhubarb, in 1/2″ slices

1 1/2 c. sliced strawberries

3 T. tapioca

1/4 t. salt

1/4 t. ground cardamom

1/8 t. ground nutmeg

3/4 t. grated orange peel

Mix above ingredients and let sit for 15 minutes before pouring into unbaked pie crust.

Pastry for two-crust pie

Roll out pie dough and line a 9″ pie pan with one of the crusts. Pour in fruit mixture, cover with top crust and crimp edges. Cut a few slits in the top, sprinkle with a little bit of sugar. (To protect edge of crust from getting too dark while baking, cut length of foil, cut in half length-wise and wrap over crimped edge of pie.) Bake at 400 degrees for 50 minutes, removing foil after 30 minutes if used.

Hey Artsy Smartsy Types! Maker Faire for Creative Tech Arts This Weekend in San Mateo, CA

Posted by Kyle Design on May 30, 2009

The coolest fair ever, the Maker Faire – science masquerading as art, high tech passing as toys, creative solutions to world problems pretending simply to be fun – is this weekend, May 30 and 31, 2009 in San Mateo, CA.

Get yourself a creative business card holder that reflects both hands-on and high functioning.

Get yourself a creative business card holder that reflects both hands-on and high functioning.

Any of you (and your kids) who love crafts, computers, music, making, DIY, tinkering, technology, recycling, building, inventing, collaborating, this is THE place to be. You’ll come away inspired, informed, invigorated and happy. Find suppliers of really unique crafts and tech materials for future projects, websites with cool things to do, and entrepreneurs who have turned hobbies into fun businesses. A “DO NOT MISS” for families.

This year’s theme is Re-Make America, in keeping with President’s Obama‘s  call to action for “the risk takers, the doers, and the makers of things” to help re-invent the USA. This is the fourth annual fair, and in past years things that captured my family’s attention were the crazy parts bikes, the motorized giant cupcake-mobiles, Fiddlesticks bendable fabric building sticks, the computerized elaborate egg decorating machine.

Robot Memory Box in Wood - A creative way to store memories of fun events.

Robot Memory Box in Wood - A creative way to store memories of fun events.

I’ve always loathed the term “artsy fartsy” because it seems intentionally disrespectful to those are trying to do something different. If you never try, you’ll never succeed! So I much prefer the term “artsy smartsy” because it better represents what inventors, designers and artists are all about. It certainly sums up this show. Bright ideas and creative execution. Really smart, funny people who express that humor in their art and technological products. I love being an artist and I LOVE this fair!

The Maker Faire website describes the event as “The ultimate DIY festival – It’s county fair meets science fair meets farmers market meets burning man for families! Maker Faire will showcase individual creativity and grassroots innovation in the largest festival devoted to DIY culture and technology in the country.”

Have a crafts room or workshop? This Building Tools DIY light switch plate is the perfect finishing touch.

The fair is open 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Sunday at the San Mateo County Expo Center.

Maker Faire Tips:

Buy your tickets off-site or ahead of time online. The crowds keep growing every year and I can only imagine what it will be like this year. Chronicle story in the paper yesterday about it, too.

Come early – lines are long just to get into the parking lot, let alone the door.

All you black sheep out there who are making a living in an unexpected way, here's a wallet that reflects your independence!

All you black sheep out there who are making a living in an unexpected way, here's a wallet that reflects your independence!

Bring food if you don’t like fried, (keep it in an ice chest in your car). Plus you can, once again, avoid long lines. (Although I am hopeful that there might be more of an emphasis on good food with the suggestion that there will be a Farmers Market.) This fair is so fabulous you will be tempted to starve rather than miss anything waiting in a line somewhere!

Wear a hat: Half the events and projects are outside, although this year it looks like it will be overcast most of the day.

Take a quick peek into each building first: Each building has a different theme and you can get stuck in any one of them for hours, so see which one looks like it is most interesting for you and your kids before getting involved. You WILL run out of time and not be able to see or experience everything.

If you appreciate creative approaches to life, please check out Kyle Design for unique gifts and home decor. We have switch plates, business card holders and practical gifts for those interested in robotics, crafts, science, music and more.

Tarantulas Invade CA, Celebrate with Spider Festival April 25th

If that tarantula stings, have your pain relief pills at the ready in your Spider Bill Box from Kyle Design

Tarantulas are on the march, heading towards Concord, CA, and the (San Francisco) Bay Area Tarantula Society’s Spring Sling Fling. This spider festival is being held today from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Concord Veterans Memorial Hall at 2290 Willow Pass Rd., Concord, CA, 94520. Admission is free – all you need is courage to overcome your fears of these creepy crawlies.

Are your fears justified? You’ll see these tarantula collectors (apparently they becomes quite addictive) allow these large invertebrates to climb all over them with hardly a care. Are these people crazy? Do they have a death wish? No and No. Members just want to spread awareness of these creatures, and no humans (on record) have ever been killed by a tarantula.

Afraid of the dark? This stained glass Spider Night Light will help calm arachnophiles fears.

Afraid of the dark? This stained glass Spider Night Light will help calm arachnophiles' fears.

However – tarantulas are not just cuddly balls of fur on the move. They really can sting if inclined using the fangs in their front legs. Plus their hair is barbed and contains a very toxic irritant. Sounds fun! Best to pick a tarantula with a laid-back disposition if you are going to start collecting them.

In our house when we hear “DAD!!!! There’s a spider!“, it’s on the ceiling. When we hear “MOM!!!! There’s a spider!”, it’s on the wall or the floor. (Lucky me.) In both situations, the inflection in our daughters’ cries would imply that the spiders are as large as tarantulas. Maybe some education about arachnids in general would be a good thing. This festival would be a good place to teach your your kids about spiders so they are brave enough to deal with them by themselves. Maybe a spider night light would help inure them to their innate fear of these fun invert pets!

How long do tarantulas live? Females can live up to 20 years, so make sure you aren’t the type who has commitment issues.

Spiders are found all over the world, just like the World Wide Web, and are serious business to arachnophiles. Here is the perfect business card holder for them.

Festival events will include demonstrations, sexing instructions and mating exhibitions where these arachnophiles intend to prevent the females from eating the males post coitus.

Fascinated by spiders? Check out my Spider Gifts where you’ll find Pill Boxes, Night Lights and Business Card Holders with spiders and arachnids.

Veterans Day, Veterinarians Day and Lions for Lambs

Posted by Kyle Design on November 12, 2007

My 3rd grader, whose turn it was to read the school bulletins over the loudspeaker lastVeterinarian Christmas Ornament week, announced that there would be no school today in honor of Veterinarians Day. But as most of us know, we are actually observing Veterans Day, when we take a moment to honor those men and women who served – our fathers, uncles, friends and coworkers.

Stars and Stripes Pill CaseYesterday, November 11, is the actual date of Veterans Day and my family and I went to see Robert Redford‘s new film Lions for Lambs. It stars Redford, Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise in a political film that encourages us to get involved and ask questions. It’s target audience is the 35-and-older crowd, into which I most comfortably fit. As people age, we do tend to take a larger view of our actions and their affect beyond just us, and become more contemplative about the world in general. So the 35-and-up crowd is more likely to enjoy a movie such as this one.

My husband and I enjoyed the movie, but our eleven-year-old was bored by itLion Night Light in Decorative Stained Glass – you need more knowledge of history and political workings to get the subtleties of the conversations in the film – and this made me realize that it is time to start talking to both of our girls about these larger topics as well. I certainly give them my opinions about a lot of subjects, but I have probably have been guilty of neglectful parenting when it comes to history and our larger society. Can we learn from past mistakes? Has our political landscape become so complicated as to make solutions impossible? What can we do to make a difference without getting lost?

Sheep and Lamb Business Card Holders

Watching the film made for some interesting conversations in the car and after we got home last night. And I don’t want it to stop there.

Please click the following links to see more Veterinarian Gifts (like the Christmas ornament above), Patriotic Gifts (pill case), Lion Gifts (night light) and Lamb Gifts (business card holder).

Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival – Record Breaking Pumpkins

Posted by Kyle Design on October 13, 2007

Pumpkin Pill Holder or Travel Case in GoldThis weekend marks the 34th annual Half Moon Bay (CA) Art and Pumpkin Festival. This year, the recording breaking pumpkin weighed in at 1524 pounds, beating the Fair’s previous record by nearly 300 pounds! These big pumpkins are on display today and tomorrow at the festival. They will also have the winners of the Most Beautiful pumpkin contest and the top locally grown pumpkin.

So just how big are this year’s crop of Champion Giant Pumpkins? It appears that farmers are getting better every year at growing the largest pumpkins. Pumpkin Themed Business Card CaseThis year’s 1524 pound Pumpkin Festival winner was grown by Thad Star of Oregon who received $9,144 in prize money for his efforts. (Maybe he could use one of my Pumpkin Business Card Holders.) The record size of a squash in a California contest was a pumpkin that weighed 1535 pounds, and was set just this week by Pete Glasier of Napa, California. The world record size of a pumpkin is 1,689 pounds and was grown this year by Joe Jutras of Rhode Island. Apparently, pumpkins in this class can gain as much as 10 pounds a day.

Oak Leaves Light SwitchplatesThe fair runs from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and admission is free. Other fun events at the fair will include more contests: pumpkin carving, pie-eating and Halloween costume contests. Plus, there will be the Great Pumpkin Parade, a display of the giant weigh-off champion pumpkins, a haunted house, home-style foods, harvest-inspired arts and crafts, and three stages of blockbuster entertainment. Something for everyone in the family.

Rain Liquor Flask in BlueIt looks like they will have great weather, too. It has been raining the last two days, but today has dawned clear and bright. Just as a warning, I used to do this fair back in the 1990’s, and what I remember most is being cold. VERY cold. It is held in downtown Half Moon Bay which is right on the coast, with a blanket of fog covering it quite often. Also, traffic can be a problem, with the long, two-way road into Half Moon Bay being very slow, so don’t plan on getting in or out of the area quickly.

Mountain Key Chain: Gift for Climbing Seven Summits

Posted by Kyle Design on September 12, 2007

Mountain Climber Key ChainI like to comment from time to time on custom gifts that are ordered and engraved. We recently had someone order our Mountain Key Chain with the following engraving:

In Honor of (Gift Recipient’s Name)
Climber of the Seven Summits,
4/1/2005 to 8/21/2007. 142,746 vert. feet.

The Seven Summits are the highest peaks on each of the 7 continents. Here is a List of the Seven Summits, with heights (feet and meters), the continents and countries they are in, and the mountain range they are part of.

Continent Mountain Height – Feet Height – Meters Country Range List
Africa Kilimanjaro 19,340 5,895 Tanzania Kilimanjaro Messner / Bass
Antarctica Vinson Massif 16,069 4,897 Chile (Claimed) Ellsworth Mountains Messner / Bass
Asia Everest 29,035 8,848 Nepal, China Himalaya Messner / Bass
Australia Kosciuszko 7,310 2,228 Austalia Great Dividing Range Bass
Australia-New Guinea Carstensz Pyramid (Puncak Jaya) 16,023 4,884 Indonesia Pegunungan Maoke Messner
Europe Elbrus 18,511 5,642 Russia Caucasus Messner / Bass
North America Mount McKinley (Denali) 20,230 6,194 United States Alaska Range Messner / Bass
South America Aconcagua 22,841 6,950 Argentina Andes Messner / Bass

So based on the total vertical feet, this woman climbed Kilimanjaro, Vinson, Everest, Carstensz Pyramid, Elbrus, Denali and Aconcagua. Congratulations to her for this amazing feat, especially as there are very few women who have climbed the Seven Summits – the vast majority are men. Here is a great list of everyone who has climbed the 7 Summits, although the last person on the list summited their seventh peak on January 1, 2007.

There are two lists of Seven Summits, based on whether you include Oceania as part of the Australian continent or not. Richard Bass created a list with Mount Kosciuszko, the tallest peak on the Australian mainland, and Reinhold Messner created his list by including Carstensz Pyramid in Indonesia. As of March of 2007, only 198 people have climbed either the Bass or Messner lists of the top seven summits, so we here at Kyle Design are proud to have our Mountain Key Chain chosen as a gift for this particular woman.

As a side note, K2 is the second tallest mountain in the world, and Aconcagua is the second tallest of the 7 summits. Also note, Mont Blanc is the highest in Europe if you count the Caucasus in Russia as being part of Asia. As it can be difficult to get accurate readings at high altitudes, there may be some variations in the official heights listed in the table above based upon new readings.
