Fall Night Lights for End of Daylight Savings 2014

Posted by Kyle Design on October 30, 2014

The other night my husband and I went out to dinner and on our way out the door I thought we were eating really late. But once I buckled up, a quick glance at the dashboard clock corrected me – it only felt late because it was already dark outside. And as I looked at the calendar on my phone, I realized it’s about to get darker a lot earlier because Daylight Savings ends this weekend on Sunday, November 2nd.

I’ve already decorated my home for Fall (loving the scent of my pumpkin spice candles!) and it’s about time to start using my Fall night lights. I hate coming home to a dark house in the evenings so I always leave a night light on in my kitchen. Whether you’re looking to add some light to a dark bathroom, hallway or kitchen, you’ll love creating your own custom night light at Kyle Design.

fall-night-lights-customize-yours-kyle-designKyle’s decorative night lights are handcrafted with her etched metal artwork and custom stained glass. Each elegant light is created just for you – choose the elegant amber glass to fit into any warm decor, or get red glass for your kitchen, blue glass for a bathroom or purple if that’s the color of the decor in your home.

The metal etched designs of Fall leaves, trees, nature, hot beverages and more come in a variety of finishes including silver, brass and gold. Kyle’s polished and brushed silver night lights look excellent in trendy homes with gray walls. If you have warmer tones, you’ll enjoy the brushed brass or polished gold night lights.

These Fall themed night lights make excellent gifts for Fall birthdays or as way to thank a host for having you over for a holiday dinner or Thanksgiving. They offer a beautiful way to decorate your home for Fall and are a great alternative to standard, tacky plastic nitelights. As we say goodbye to October and welcome November and December, let’s not let setting our clocks back result in stumbling around in the dark. Order a custom night light from Kyle Design.

Decorative Night Lights for Kids Who are Scared of the Dark

Posted by Kyle Design on September 17, 2014

Is your son or daughter scared of the dark?

Many small children are afraid of the dark and the best way to alleviate their night time fears is with a night light. Adding a soft, glowing light to a kid’s bedroom offers your son or daughter reassurance during the night.

At Kyle Design, we have a variety of designs that are popular for children’s rooms including the carousel night light for girls, rocket night light for boys, butterfly night light, star night light, celestial night light, fairy night light, baseball night light and more.

Click customize my nightlight to select from hundreds of Kyle’s unique designs.

Kyle’s nightlights are handcrafted so each one is created specifically for your son’s or daughter’s room. You get to select the stained glass color, the metal finish of the decorative design (shown: brass carousel and silver rocket), and the base type.

Automatic night lights are best for kids’ rooms as they turn on when it gets dark but also turn off in the early morning hours when they’re no longer needed.

It’s Time to Talk Sweets!

Posted by Kyle Design on November 30, 2011

Um, how come no one told me there’s a National Desserts day? I’m surprised to learn such a thing exists and I haven’t heard of it…I mean, I, of all people, should have founded it! I’m an eat-dessert-for-breakfast, lunch and dinner kind of girl! (I mean as the entree, not as the encore.) If there’s leftover birthday cake sitting in my kitchen, you better believe I’m eating it for breakfast. And if I happen to catch a glance at the dessert menu, there’s a good chance I’m ordering the Warm Apple Crisp or Molten Chocolate Cake for dinner. This is something that has caused some tension between my health-nut husband and I, but it’s something I learned from my mother and life’s just too short (another thing she taught me) to skip dessert!

In celebration of sweets, Kyle Design has some great chocolate themed gifts for women who love sugary surprises. Dessert lovers beware – these tasty treats may make you hungry!

By the way, National Dessert Day was last month, but why wait? Go ahead and order dessert for your next entree – trust me, it tastes much better when you’re not too full to enjoy it! And don’t worry about adding on a couple of extra pounds – we’re headed into winter and it’s nothing a slouchy sweater or trendy trench coat won’t hide!

Popular Paint Color Ideas & Hot Interior Colors for 2011

Posted by Kyle Design on March 10, 2011

In keeping with the theme of yesterday’s post, I thought it might be a good idea to see what new, hot interior paint colors are in style for 2011. (Actually, I came home yesterday and managed to convince myself that my kitchen wall was feeling drab – might just be time to freshen it up, so I searched for ideas online.) I’ve listed my top 10 findings below, with credit due in large part to the Pantone Spring 2011 Fashion Color Report. I honestly like ALL of these, so if you’ve got an opinion, feel free to help sway my decision!

1. HONEYSUCKLE – On the contrary, pink is indeed for everybody (men and women, kids and adults). It’s an excellent color choice if you want to perk up a room or just add a fun splash of color to your decor – our Personalized Quilting Tape Measure Gifts are a great example of this.

2. PEACOCK – A rich, deep teal like this makes a great accent color in an otherwise neutral toned house. For a subtle contrast effect, buy home furnishings accented with blue-green hues – like our Decorative Arts and Crafts Designer Switch Plates – and strategically place them around the home.

3. SILVER GRAYThe coolest neutral tone of the season, this traditional hue will work with any color scheme like the classic contrasted black as seen on our Personalized Scales of Justice Stamp Dispenser Box.

4. LAVENDER – Timeless, yet versatile, there’s a common consensus that this trendy color is always in style. In fact, our Lavender Colored Iris Letter Opener is a Kyle Design best-seller.

5. AMBER – With tones ranging from goldenrod to florescent, yellow is useful for attention-getting and drawing the eye to notice. It may not be a good idea to use this color in your bedroom – you might never get any sleep! – but it could certainly make another space more cheery (see our Elegant Amber Exotic Wood Monogrammed Valet Box for a great beeswax or butter colored furnishing idea).

6. ROSEMARY – According to the psychology of color, green is most associated with nature and it can therefore make any space seem soothing, comfortable or familiar. Try decorating your home with hints of green – like the Tree of Life Night Light with Gorgeous Green Stain Glass – to add an element of harmony to common spaces or bedrooms.

7. RUSSET – Brown shades and earthy tones add a sense of comfort to a room, not to mention style, so it’s a great shade to use for professional settings. Check out our Unique Eye Doctor Desktop Card Holder Stand for a stylish example.

8. REGATTA – A cool oceanside or boat blue, similar to that seen on our Cool Decorative Lighthouse Ceiling Fan Pulls.

9. CITRUS – Orange, in all of of its various and glorified hues, is apparently the “IT” color of 2011. Brighten your space with Bright Sun Kissed Orange Message Magnet Clips, which add a fun touch of color to kitchen appliances and office file cabinets.

10.AQUAWith calm undertones of blue, this serene hue adds a modern, playful touch without any drastic changes. Color it throughout the rooms of your house with paint or fun decorations, like our Personalized Paradise Anchor Holiday Christmas Ornaments.

Sun Catchers Add A Beautiful Pop Of Color To Your Space

Eggshell. Ivory. Pearl. It’s a well known fact that neutral colors are safe – they go well with everything, allowing for ultimate flexibility in decorating and they’re simply low maintenance, which is great when you don’t have the time or money to spend on home decor makeovers. However, too much white or beige can be overwhelming at times, so it’s a good idea to add some color to your home for dimension and personality. While painting can sometimes be expensive, time-consuming or relatively daunting for those who don’t particularly enjoy do-it-yourself (DIY) projects, you can find hassle-free ideas on how to add color without painting such as the following helpful tips and tricks:

Show Off Your Interests With Custom Designer Switch Plates

Decorate your switch plates with cool custom images and colors that reflect your interests.

1. Add colorful lighting. Striking stain glass night lights are both fashionable and functional – customize a night light with a decorative design image and beautiful stain glass color that matches the decor of a given room for a cool personal touch.

2. Take advantage of natural lighting. Hanging creative etched metal sun catchers can add a gorgeous burst of color to any room when the sun is shining at its brightest.

3. Decorate your switch plates and home appliances. Add personalized design patterns and vibrant colors to your switch plates to create stylish decorative wall plate covers. Or use practical organizing accessories like strong art glass magnet clips around your kitchen or office for subtle, yet creative works of art.

Need to replace your home appliances? Popular appliance manufacturers are now integrating vibrant colors like Blackberry (Eggplant Purple) and Lemongrass (Spring Green) into their product lines – forget stainless steel and add some personality to your kitchen, laundry room or bath with a jazzy refrigerator or bold washer and dryer set!

Gift Solutions for Petroleum Engineers Oil Spill Headaches

Posted by Kyle Design on June 11, 2010

Petrochemical Engineer Large Pill Box

A pill box designed for a petrochemical engineer, perfect place to keep the Advil needed to relieve the headache caused by this tragedy.

Like you, I am deeply saddened over the tragedy of the BP Oil Spill. It has been more than a month and a half since the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded, triggering the vast oil spill 5,000 feet below the Gulf of Mexico’s surface.

Custom Fisherman Money Clip

Give the gift of financial aide to the fishermen affected by the halt of the fishing industry in the Gulf Coast with our Fisherman’s Money Clip

Despite the placement of the containment cap over the leak, which will prevent 15,000 bbl. a day, 10,000 bbl. will still leak out. Oil will continue to bubble out until August when the relief wells will finally contain the spills.

There are already over 1,000 people working to clean up the spill, along with more than 32 ships and several aircraft’s. What a headache!

Fishing and boating has been halted until the oil is cleaned up, crippling the fishing, shrimping and crabbing industry in the gulf coast. BP is issuing checks to all the furloughed fisherman in an attempt to make things right. However, it is only a fraction of what they would have made had they not been cutoff for the summer.

Perhaps the saddest effect of the oil spill has been the harm to the wildlife due to he oil spill. So far the casualties are at 444 dead birds, 222 dead sea turtles and 24 mammals {including dolphins}.

Giant Sea Turtle Night Light

Our Sea Turtle night light is a great way to commemorate the many sea turtles lost due to the oil spill

Even though we are going to be feeling the effects of this disaster for a while, there are things we can do to help the environment.

Going Green Christmas Ornament

Now is the perfect time to start adapting a more environmentally conscious lifestyle. Here is hoping to a quick solution, and a restored Gulf Coast!

What steps can you take today to live more green?

Itchy Eyes, Runny Noses and Cloudy Skies – Oh, The Joys of Spring!

Posted by Kyle Design on May 19, 2010

Handy pollen travel cases for tissues, inhalers and eye drops - sure to be appreciated by those who suffer from hay fever!

Got hay fever? Keep your tissues and allergy meds at arm's length with this functional and fashionable Floating Pollen travel case.

A freshly-brewed, hot drink on a cold, rainy day is truly perfection at its best.

Delicious cocoa and coffee nightlights are sure to warm your heart and your home on any cloudy day.

It’s that time again. Fresh flowers blooming throughout, birds and the bees enthusiastically twittering and buzzing about in manner of Bambi and the air generally filled with an ‘out with the old, in with the new’ feeling wherever you go. A seasonal phenomenon, so aptly defined by the late-great Mark Twain: “It’s spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you’ve got it, you want – oh, you don’t quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!” All too true, but wait– I think I might instead know exactly what I want, and the “want” I’ve got is a cure for the awful hay fever symptoms I’ve been having.

In light of the recent soundtrack of sneezes and coughs that have afflicted the entire Kyle Design staff, it can be concluded that this is the one of the worst California allergy seasons we’ve had in a very, very long time. In fact, it came as no surprise that the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) has rated San Francisco/the Bay Area as the 63rd most challenging place to live with spring allergies. Wheeze, hack, snort and “Do you have any lubricating eye drops?” have become typical, albeit disturbing, sounds of the studio over the last few weeks, and our fingers are fiercely crossed that we can all survive the remaining month or so until summer’s arrival.

To our asthmatic and allergy-prone friends, we most certainly feel your [sinus] pain.

On the upside, we’ve all been finding immediate joy in this gloomy, somewhat out-of-place rainy weather of the past week. Not only do we hail the rain (no pun intended) as a magical marvel in clearing up our sinuses, but April and May showers have made us happier, busier bees around the studio, and we’re hoping to extend this joy to each of our customers with our latest designs. For now, my goal is to enjoy watching the wet rain fall from a tauntingly dry indoors view armed with a plush blanket and a fresh cup of tea. Ah, I’m filled with warm, fuzzy feelings just at the thought…

Leonardo da Vinci Drawings at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco with Kids

Posted by Kyle Design on January 3, 2009

Artists throughout time have produced works that feature the human face, such as Kyle's "Faces in Profile" stain glass night light.

Artists throughout time have produced works that feature the human face, such as Kyle's "Faces in Profile" stain glass night light.

My husband and I took our kids (11 and 9) to see the San Francisco exhibit Leonardo da Vinci: Drawings from the Biblioteca Reale in Turin (Italy) at the Legion of Honor. It was a real treat to be able to see the drawing (under glass) very close up. The museum even supplies magnifying glasses for use for those who’d like the extra help with really seeing all the details. Many of the drawings were done in metalpoint, a technique that uses a metal stylus to sketch on specially prepared paper and which results in particularly fine details.

Leonardo da Vinci had four main areas of interest that he explored throughout his life: the human face (and how it ages), the human body, horses and flight. These themes appear again and again as he studied these subjects. In any one codex (hand-written manuscript) of his, the pages often contained  both images and text, sometimes right on top of one another or completely surrounded within the body of text.

He truly understood the musculature and how little changes or movements affected the results. You can see this extensive knowledge coming through in his work. I was struck by just how well he portrayed the power of the figures and horses, by really seeing the fine detailing of shadow and line. The pieces are powerful.

When leaving the exhibit and seeing other works by other artists from about the same time period (Francesco Pesellino, d. 1457, for example), it is stunning just how exceptional da Vinci’s work is. A point that I easily made to my children by comparing the works on the spot, who then really got it, because they could immediately make the comparison and appreciate the work of this true master.

Da Vinci (1452-1519) was a contemporary of Michael Angelo (1475 – 1564), and apparently felt somewhat threatened by the fame and attention the younger artist was receiving. Da Vinci apparently didn’t finish much of his work – too many ideas, too little time perhaps, or it is likely he was just seeking knowledge for its own sake – which affected his career at the time. But if this competitiveness helped spur him on, then lucky for us – his works are a gift to mankind.

Sea Turtles are a popular image for both children and adults - depicted here on a silver vitamin box.

On an amusing note, one of the informational signs at the show provided background on the Biblioteca Reale (Royal Library), mentioning that it holds works by Rafael, Leonardo da Vinci and others. So what does a nine-year-old tune into? The fact that Rafael and Leonardo are both names of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I’ll take it.

The show ends tomorrow, so hurry! November 15, 2008 — January 4, 2009 at the Legion of Honor.

Happy New Year 2009 – What Will Be New, New, New at Kyle Design

Posted by Kyle Design on January 1, 2009

Stain Glass Fireworks Night Light - Celebrate the New Year and add some excitement to a dark corner!

Stain Glass Fireworks Night Light - Celebrate the New Year and add some excitement to a dark corner!

Happy New Year 2009! Although I didn’t stay up to the bitter end, I know for sure it arrived because I woke up to hear the fireworks in my neighborhood going off at midnight. But now I’m up early (5:00 a.m. and it is oh so quiet outside) and thinking about what I want to add to my site this year.

Kyle Design’s New Year’s Resolutions

1. Finish New Items: It’s time to finish up all my half-started new items and get them up on the site. These include a new line of beaded jewelry, wall mirrors, switch plate guards, magnetic badge holders, 5″ square jewelry or valet boxes (like the Prosperity Box below), among many other items. I don’t think this problem is the result of procrastination so much as distraction from so many things to do….

Futuristic Business Card Holders with Carbon Atom symbolize new developments, advances and hope for the future.

Futuristic Business Card Holders with Carbon Atom symbolize new developments, advances and hope for the future.

2. Expand New Thematic Gift Pages: So many designs, so little time….  I added 65 new design series just as the holidays were hitting. I only had time to create a few items each for my new animals, numbers, sports, technical professions, foods, Asian characters and symbols pages. Time to expand the product pages of all those new designs. Yes, we have global products which you can customize with any of our 350+ designs, but customers often prefer to see how a particular design actually looks on a product. We’ll keep at it!

3. Dare I Say It – Create More New Designs: Even after making a big push to get fresh designs done in time for the holidays, there are always more that customers request – usually the day after the cutoff. This year those requests included skiing, a tank, jigsaw puzzle, the numbers 60, 75 and 80, a kitchen theme, New York, Eiffel Tower, field hockey, hope – and the list goes on. Right now, I’m looking at a list of nearly 100 ideas. I do love designing, but it is also very time-consuming and physically exhausting, so I can only do so much at a stretch. If I can kick out 20 or 30 in the next month or so I will be very pleased. If anyone has a suggestion for a new pattern I should be doing, bring it on! Please! I listen, really. No promises, but if there is enough interest you may see it show up in a future design run. {Thank you in advance 😉 .  }

Valet Box with the Chinese Character for Prosperity - Great gift idea with a positive sentiment for the New Year

Valet Box with the Chinese Character for Prosperity - Great gift idea with a positive sentiment for the New Year

2008 Was A Good Year. Our focus on organization and preparation really paid off during the 2008 holidays – we were really busy (and were very thankful for it)  – but the season has never gone so smoothly or efficiently for us. Not to say we haven’t identified  a couple more areas that could use improvement. (I can’t keep popping off with “oh yeah, that’s something new I just added…” when a customer asks about something that my staff has no idea about.)

One benefit of being in business as long as we have – since 1982 – is that we have the time to work out the kinks and get our act together. But products, times and systems do continue to change, so there are always new challenges. Kudos to my staff for all their great ideas, suggestions, organization, efficiency and depth of knowledge. It keeps our customers – and us – happy.

So here’s to a great 2009 and a happy, happy New Year!

Happy Christkwanzmakah! Holiday Celebration for Mixed Religion Families

Posted by Kyle Design on December 30, 2008

Hanukkah Christmas Ornament - Perfect Solution for Mixed Religion Marriages

Hanukkah Christmas Ornament - Perfect Solution for Mixed Religion Marriages

Mixed religion marriages can face difficult questions during the holidays about how best to celebrate religious practices while respecting each other’s beliefs. So many religious holiday celebrations often overlap – this year Christmas and Hanukkah overlapped as did Kwanzaa and Muharram, the Islamic New Year.

Negotiating  plans for holiday celebrations is something each family needs to work out for themselves, but for one of Kyle Design’s customers, the solution is “Christkwanzmakkah“, a name that encompasses all the holidays in which their family members participate.

Christians and Muslims Can Celebrate Holidays Together with this Islamic Star Christmas Ornament

Christians and Muslims Can Celebrate Holidays Together with this Islamic Star Christmas Ornament

What a wonderful approach! As our customer explained it, rather than referring only to one event during their religious holiday planning, implying it is the somehow the most important or real or true, this family came up with this special name “Christkwanzmakkah” that lets friends and extended family members know that, in their case, Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are all being actively celebrated with equal importance.

Truly, a beautiful solution that reflects the best sentiments of the season!
