Kathryn Bigelow Wins Big at Oscars – A Perfect Start to International Women’s Day

Posted by Kyle Design on March 8, 2010

Mark your calendars: today is International Women’s Day, annually celebrated on March 8th as a day of love, respect and appreciation for women’s achievements around the globe. And for those of us recovering from the Academy Award thrills last night, there’s certainly more than enough reason to pay tribute to Kathryn Bigelow today, the winning woman of the night and first-ever female to win an Oscar for Best Director. With a slew of successful films like Point Break, Blue Steel and now The Hurt Locker under her belt, the 58-year old award-winning filmmaker is an inspiration for doing what she loves, plain and simple:

Kudos to women everywhere who pursue their dreams without gender limitations.

Kathryn Bigelow is just one example of an inspirational, accomplished woman.

Let the inspirational woman in your life know she's the award-winner in your heart.

“If there’s specific resistance to women making movies, I just choose to ignore that as an obstacle for two reasons: I can’t change my gender, and I refuse to stop making movies.” — Kathryn Bigelow

There’s also something to be said for the fact that her most notable competitor was actually ex-husband James Cameron, director of popular success Avatar. Really, it takes a humble woman to restrain herself from exploding into a series of Running Man dance moves and gloating to the extreme in such a moment of victory. Well done, Ms. Bigelow. Well done, indeed.

Joking aside, International Women’s Day truly is an occasion to celebrate women and what we are capable of. How lucky we are to have a day in which we can revel in the amazing successes we’ve made, and where we can congratulate one another in accomplishing what we love. Take today as an opportunity to pat your girlfriend, mom, wife, sister, female cousin or aunt on the back and show her just how special she really is.

For Oscar-worthy present ideas and accessories to make her feel like a winner, check out Achievement Gifts for Leading Ladies and “I Am Woman” Home Décor Ideas available exclusively at Kyle Design. Impress her with a unique gift personalized especially for her: Mirror Compacts, Purse and Handbag Holders and Eye-Catching Business Card Cases.

California Independent Film Festival – 10th Annual Event

Posted by Kyle Design on April 17, 2008

Film Projector Holiday Ornament in GoldThe California Independent Film Festival is going on April 16th – 20th in Livermore, CA, where my business is based. Now in its 10th year, the festival features indie films from around the world and presents awards in the categories of picture, short, mini short, documentary, student film, animation, actress, actor, director, score, editing, cinematography, screenplay and music video.

Poker Credit Card WalletA whole series of events are scheduled through the weekend, including a Celebrity Poker Tournament, the Iron Filmmaker Contest (make a 3-minute film in 24 hours based on the given topic), and the Golden Slate Awards Presentation featuring an interview by John Madden with actress Penny Marshall.

Digital Camera Christmas Ornament and Film Awards MedalIn conjunction with the film festival the Livermore Valley Charter School encouraged student entries from 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Twenty-four groups submitted short films (my daughter among them) in the competition and last night, we watched the the awards ceremony where the winners were presented with trophies. Awards were presented for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places, plus one honorable mention. We were, in fact, quite impressed. Winning entries included a pseudo-exposé, an animated short, a black-and-white film noir, and a tense chase film with a surprising ending. All the kids’ film entries will be shown on the big screen on Friday morning at the Vine Theater in downtown Livermore. The Livermore wine country makes a great destination if you want to make a day or weekend of the events as it has a large number of popular wineries including Wente Vineyards, Concannon Vineyards and Stoney Ridge Winery.

Queen Elizabeth I Halloween Costume with Coronation Crown

Posted by Kyle Design on October 30, 2007

Queen Elizabeth I Halloween Costume with Crown and ScepterMy youngest daughter requested a Queen Elizabeth I Halloween costume this year so I made her a gold brocade coronation gown and a jewel-encrusted golden crown. We saw Elizabeth the movie earlier this year and listened to books on tape about the queen’s early years as well, so this was my daughter’s concept for months. For inspiration, we used still shots from the movie as well as the one portrait of Queen Elizabeth I that seems to be available.Queen Elizabeth I of England Coronation Portrait

Working with what we could find, I was able to make a gown, cape, crown and scepter that definitely invoke the feeling of the image. Note that the actual crown no longer exists because it was melted down in the mid 1600s.

Queen Elizabeth I Halloween Costume with Jewel Encrusted Crown and ScepterCoronation Gown: We found a beautiful golden brocade fabric at Britex in San Francisco which had a flower pattern – we were hoping for roses, the Tudor symbol, and maybe these are rosebuds on the fabric. I used two different patterns, Butterick 4887 and Simplicity 5835, and modified them to fit the shape of this gown with its long pointed bodice and pleated folds over hip bustles. If you’d like to see larger photos, other views or read tips and tricks on how I altered the patterns, please click Queen Elizabeth I Costume and Crown.

Crown Jewels of England - Queen Elizabeth I Coronation CrownCoronation Crown Jewels: Crown Christmas Ornament for QueenI made an etched gold crown with the eight bands of metal and a large cross at the top. I embellished the crown with ruby, diamond, sapphire and aquamarine colored Swarovski crystals which took me 6 hours to glue on. >:-( I couldn’t find crystals as large as those in the photo, so I had to wing it a bit and do what was possible. I needed large flat back rhinestones and found the best selection of sizes, colors and new shapes at Dreamtime Creations. I was really pleased with the prices and service, too.

Pink Princess Hip Flasks Fit For a QueenI couldn’t actually tell whether there was fabric in the middle of the crown or not either, so we decided on purple velvet because purple was the color of royalty. Some more modern day crowns are made with red velvet, some with purple, but because the photo was so dark, we assumed that if there was fabric it was most likely purple. The deep color also allows the gold and jewels to pop against it.

Handbag Business Card HolderScepter: I made the scepter, or sceptre as the English spell it, out of a 18″ expandable brass curtain rod and glued the rhinestones around the top and base of it using E6000 glue. The scepter is the symbol of royal authority.

Fur Cape: Rather than adhere to authenticity, I chose practicality when it came to making the cape. The cape in the portrait is huge – long, full and fur-lined inside as well as along the outside collar and one can only imagine how heavy it was. I chose instead to make a shorter cape with slits at the side so my daughter could still use hers hands while wearing it.

I had been intending to make fake ermine, and had tested simply taking a black marker to the white short-haired fur that we found which looked pretty good, but just ran out of time before our first event, Livermore’s Downtown Halloween Night, which is always the Thursday before Halloween each year. For this event, all the stores along the main streets in downtown Livermore hand out candy to all the children. It is a very well attended event and it is fun to see so many fabulous costumes. The kids are so cute!!

The Ultimate Halloween Bag - Gold Designer HandbagAccessories: Instead of a tacky plastic pumpkin in which to collect her candy while trick-or-treating, my daughter instead selected a metallic gold handbag. It has already received many compliments at parties and events! Might as well make your handbag match your costume – those finishing touches really make a difference. She add lace pumps and gold earrings that another artist friend, Katya, made to complete her look.
I must share one comment my daughter received at Downtown Halloween Night. A women passing by said, “Cut all that princess c***p, you just went straight to being the queen. Good for you!”

Who was Queen Elizabeth I? She was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, and she was known as the Virgin Queen of England because she never married. She was born in 1533, and reined from 1558 until her death in 1603 at the age of 69.

Movies: The first Elizabeth movie came out in 1998. The new Queen Elizabeth I movie Elizabeth: The Golden Age came out just this month and we plan to see it now that the costume is finished. It stars Cate Blanchett, Clive Owens as Sir Walter Raleigh, and Geoffrey Rush as Sir Francis Walsingham.

Girl’s Halloween Costume Idea: Oscar-Winner Julia Roberts in Valentino Dress

Posted by Kyle Design on October 17, 2007

julia-roberts-valentino-1.jpgLast year, my 10-year-old daughter’s request for her Julia Roberts Accepting Oscar Statue in 2001Halloween costume was to be Julia Roberts wearing Valentino. This was the black and white designer dress she wore when she received the 2001 Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in Erin Brockovich (2000). Julia Roberts is holding her Oscar Statuette after receiving her Academy Award in the photo at right.

I made my daughter’s costume out of velveteen, netting and satin ribbon. My daughter loved the costume and was thrilled when people actually recognized who she was.

I started with Butterick pattern 3484 which is a long dress with an Empire waist and a slit down the front. I altered the pattern pieces so the slit was in the back of my version. I edged the slit with white satin ribbon and added several yards of netting gathered under the back of the slit. To create the “V” of shear fabric in the front, I sewed on a “V” of the shear with two rows of stitching, then cut away the velveteen underneath. I then trimmed the edges with the white satin that became the straps of the dress as well.

To finish out the look, we added a matching hair piece and black and white high-heeled shoes. In addition, I purchased a small Oscar-like statuette that we had engraved with Julia Roberts – Best Actress. These small award statues are quite affordable and can be purchased from trophy and award companies like K 2 Awards or They ship very quickly, even with the engraving.

Sneak Preview of New Music Designs at Kyle Design

Posted by Kyle Design on July 29, 2007

New Music and Hobbies Patterns from Kyle DesignsAnd now for the final preview of my new designs for summer 2007: Music and Hobbies designs which include some of the most often requested images.

I’ll start out with the Photography design that features aComedy and Tragedy Masks Money Clip digital camera with a traditional film border detail. Complementing this is the new Movie Camera & Film design that has an old fashioned movie camera with the reels on top and with film border accents. These images are perfect for both amateur and professional photographers, directors, film crews and even reporters. They are a nice complement to our current Comedy/Tragedy pattern as shown here on an engravable money clip.

Scrapbooking has been an immensely popular pastime and my design features scrapbook pages, paper, scissors, pens, rubber stamps and cutouts. I even do a bit of scrapbooking myself.

I was particularly motivated to begin creating my scrapbooks when I saw how faded some of my photos from a 1976 high school trip to Japan have become. I don’t want to lose those photographic reminders of a trip which had a huge impact on me as an artist.

I was stunned by the sophistication of contemporary Japanese design, especially in comparison to the very functional packaging and design of American products. It really impressed upon me the value of quality design on everyday items. This really formed my current approach to design – creating useful gifts that are artfully styled. I’ll talk more about all this at a later date.

Iris Decorative Light Switch PlatesI know Gardening is a particularly popular hobby and even I have become more of a gardener in the last few years. I love the irises, roses and lavender in my garden. I have created a Garden Gate design that features a pretty vine-covered arch over the gate along with roses and grasses, flowers and trees, and even a bird’s nest with two eggs. The Gardening image has a montage of a watering can, seed packets, trowel, cultivator and potted plant. My newest flower is a delicate, ruffled Hibiscus. At left is one of my Iris Flowers Light Switch Plates.

Lastly are the Musical Instruments designs. These include Drums, aPersonalized Piano Christmas Ornaments contemporary Saxophone design, a Violin and Guitars – both Acoustic and Electric. These round out our current Piano and Musical Note motifs. These images work for musicians, music teachers and those who enjoy playing and listening to music. We expect these to be especially popular on our Personalized Christmas Ornaments.

Custom Christmas Ornament Color CombinationsAll the gift examples I’ve shown in this post happen to be in black and white with silver, but all the pieces actually come in many, many colors. The color chart at left is just a sampling of some of the custom color combinations that you can choose for the Christmas Ornaments, for example. We have such a range of colors on our gifts that you can usually match the colors of your team, school, wedding, company or just your personal favorite color.

Look for these new designs on my site in about a week. To see more stylish, useful gifts, please visit our Actor, Director and Drama Student Gifts. For flowers, visit Flowers, Irises and Roses Gifts. For really different holiday ornaments, visit Unique Personalized Christmas Ornaments.
