This time of year my roses are just beginning to bud out, bringing the promise of fragrant blooms to come. The only thing is, these tender buds were completely covered with sap-sucking aphids. If left to their own devices, these small green bugs would make my promise of roses just a dream.

I’ve been trying to use more environmentally-friendly ways to eliminate pests in my garden, so this spring I tried live ladybugs as an alternative to spraying with insecticidal soap. I bought two bags of 1000 cute red crawlies at my local nursery. In the evening, just after sunset, I misted down the ground around rose bushes, and released them throughout the rose garden.

My girls love the idea of the garden being full of ladybugs and like to see them hard at work protecting our flowers, so this turned into a family activity as well as a lesson on safe, creative ways to save your garden from pests.

The next morning we went out and explored the garden. We found were ladybugs all over the roses, but there wasn’t an aphid to be found! So ladybugs aren’t just cute, they ferocious aphid-eating machines. Ladybugs Rule!
