Happy Islamic New Year 2009 to all Muslims celebrating Muharram which began at sunset on December 28th, 2008. Because the Islamic calendar is lunar based and therefore about 11 or 12 days shorter, it sometimes happens that, according to a Gregorian calendar, New Years occurs twice in one year, and this happens to be one of those years. This is year A.H. 1430 on the Islamic calendar. The month-long celebration will end in January, 2009, so it really is considered New Years 2009.

I recently made a new addition to my Islamic Gifts page following a call from a customer. She is a member of the Nation of Islam, a branch of the Islamic religion that is followed by many here in the United States. The symbol for their faith is also a star and crescent design, but with a difference. Their logo has the crescent moon opening up to the left, still with a star nestled within it.

The customer asked if we could simply flip the design we currently have. (I love challenges like this – as a professional artist I enjoy looking at things in a non-traditional way and seeing what else I can come up with.)

On our square designs, this didn’t quite work as the orientation wasn’t right. The image normally faces to the upper right and we were needing one that faces just slightly to the lower left. However, we discovered that on our round designs, if we rotated the design to the left about 135 degrees it would be angled correctly.

As a result, I created this custom business card holder that features the round star and crescent moon medallion nestled within frame. It is now available on our site in a wide variety of metal finishes and colors – and we can custom engrave them, too. The customer was very pleased and I was happy to find a solution to this design challenge.

On surprising note, we sell a quite a large number of Star and Crescent Moon liquor flasks. Traditionally, followers of Islam don’t drink alcohol, so I have been somewhat confused by this.

However, upon reflection, I have assumed that either they are being used as water canteens (a much more attractive alternative to the environmentally unfriendly disposable plastic water bottle) or that non-Muslims just like the design being that celestial images in general are quite popular.

Happy Christkwanzmakah! Holiday Celebration for Mixed Religion Families

Hanukkah Christmas Ornament - Perfect Solution for Mixed Religion Marriages

Hanukkah Christmas Ornament - Perfect Solution for Mixed Religion Marriages

Mixed religion marriages can face difficult questions during the holidays about how best to celebrate religious practices while respecting each other’s beliefs. So many religious holiday celebrations often overlap – this year Christmas and Hanukkah overlapped as did Kwanzaa and Muharram, the Islamic New Year.

Negotiating  plans for holiday celebrations is something each family needs to work out for themselves, but for one of Kyle Design’s customers, the solution is “Christkwanzmakkah“, a name that encompasses all the holidays in which their family members participate.

What a wonderful approach! As our customer explained it, rather than referring only to one event during their religious holiday planning, implying it is the somehow the most important or real or true, this family came up with this special name “Christkwanzmakkah” that lets friends and extended family members know that, in their case, Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are all being actively celebrated with equal importance.

Truly, a beautiful solution that reflects the best sentiments of the season!
